“Thirty.
Age isn’t a thing to me, and it is.
At the beginning of the year, I came across one of those inspirational New Year’s quotes that read ‘A year from now, you’ll wish you started today.’ After spending time to divine what that meant to me, it hit me.
Health was the wish for me, which inevitably led me to be a part of this exhibit you are looking at now.
As a gay man, I’ve struggled with body issues. Looking at photos online of beautiful Adonis like humans, and feeling like I wasn’t worthy. I would avoid taking my shirt off in front of the mirror because I couldn’t accept and love what I saw for who I was at that time. Thinking about those moments now, I feel sadness for my past self, not able to see a beautiful human whose worth is not hinged on appearance; Who is accepted and loved by so many incredible individuals excluding himself. Once I reached an all time low, I decided to work on that as the gift to myself for my 30th, which I thought was just going to be a physical transformation.
A journey, or more accurately battle in my mind began.
Looking back on it I am incredibly proud of the mental as well as physical growth I have achieved. The most impactful lesson I have gained from this, thus far, is if your mind isn’t positive/healthy it will be incredibly difficult to create positive change in other areas of your life.
I want to take this moment to encourage you to try, remain consistent and work hard. You can do the thing. Physical or otherwise, start small, and go far!â€
