“I met Boon at Camp 2018. He was actually the first new friend Iâd made. We spoke about our families and our work while sitting around the campfire. I just remember his calm, soothing demeanor and felt safe with him. A few months after camp, I had a quick conversation with him online, he said heâd love to photograph me at camp 2019. It shocked me. What an honor.
So, Camp 2019 came around and Boon and I messaged back & forth. We decided to shoot in the afternoon on the first full day there. I know Boon has to feel connected and inspired by the person heâs shooting so I honestly felt some pressure.
The next day at lunch, he sat next to me and simply asked, âSo, how are things?â
I wanted to speak honestly, be real and raw. The floodgates opened. Right there, in the middle of the Camp Mess Hall, surrounded by all of the other Camp Staff & Speakers, Boon & I had an intense conversation about whatâs been going on in my life.
Through tears and choked up thoughts, I told Boon about all of the heavy internal work Iâve been doing this past year, about my journey into ârecoveryâ by attending Al-Anon meetings, having a sponsor, and working the 12 steps myself. Al-Anon is a support group for family & friends of alcoholics & addicts. Those relationships affect us deeply. Us being the sober people in the family, the care takers, the worriers, the codependent enablers. Iâm working so fucking hard on being a better person. Iâm trying to take better care of myself, to eradicate my codependency and to detach, with love, from my âqualifiersâ.
After our conversation, Boon decided it was time for the photo shoot and I happily (and nervously) followed his lead. Iâve never been photographed my a male photographer, so this was also huge for me. A big step, in so many ways. I knew I was safe with Boon. Not only to be photographed totally nude & exposed, but I also knew I was safe to speak with him about my deep & vulnerable truths. He was the only person I talked to like that at camp.
The session was beautiful. Boon was in his element and I felt honored to be in his presence. Heâs an incredible person and someone I very fondly call my dear friend.
I love you Boon. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience. I cannot wait to see my photos. I just know theyâre going to be amazing. ”
