It has been a couple of years since Minh-Ly contacted me to have a collaborative session together, but somehow the timing has never been right. And finally, an opportunity arised, she was visiting Calgary from Montreal (where she based out of) and we managed to arrange something.Â
When I walked into the address given to me, I realized that the owner of the apartment was a mutual friend of ours – Greg. The funny story is, Greg felt a little disbelief that his tiny, dark, cluttered man cave can be used for photo shoot. Until Minh-Ly informed Greg that the photographer is me, he gave her the green light.
“If anyone can make a good picture in this apartment, that would be Boon.”
That is a very humbling compliment from Greg. And I have to say, I love challenges and constraints like this. In my opinion, every place has its character and story. No matter what size it is, it can always be sliced and diced to create its own creative space. The beauty of a space does not have be pinterest worthy or coming out from an interior design magazine. It’s the honesty and the human essence within a space that helps bring soul and emotion. There are also many tools that we photographers can use to embrace these constraints and amplify it to our benefit.
On the side note, I will be teaching my creative process this June 10 – 13 at the Camp Do More, located at Haliburton, Ontario. If you are interested to do some learning with me, come check out my class – Choreograph with Boon Ong. (Click HERE for more info of the class.)
I think for this collection, Greg will be equally as excited as Minh-Ly. Thank you for the space Greg, this is for you too.Â
