Second day of The Calm & The Chaos workshop.
Morning. First photography demo with a model. I was lost.
“It’s not working.” Yes. Everything was not working.
With a group of attendees watching behind my back, I lost all my connection and intimacy that I typically have photographing someone … someone that is not solely a subject, but with emotions, expression and many life stories that come along with them. With all the eyes watching, I was burdened, distracted, and completely out of my element.
“If I am not ready, I shouldn’t be teaching.” I felt defeated, as if I’ve failed everyone’s trust and belief in me.
I have to step away … to breathe … to recompose. And Teri stepped in, doing what she always does best, with her high energy, positive charisma, bringing out a different side of the model. Wow. It was eye opening!
Noon. Second demo with a male model – Sean.
I knew I have to switch up the way to do the demo, it has to be my way, the Boon’s way – to be truthful and honest to all the attendees and myself. I needed the peace and quiet. I requested everyone to step back, take their seat, concentrate in what I am about to show them, and leave the chat and discussion later.
And I zoned out completely, working only with Sean.
Show time. And the rest was history …
Few days later, a random message came in.
“I must say, I was scared to capture Sean. So scared. … That was my first time photographing a man. I am glad I was there to learn from you, the group in general was wonderful. But your comfort level, your leadership is what helped me, allowed me to take his photos and be comfortable in that room. So thank you for that. … I have been searching for this for a long time, but had no idea how to do it, you’ve taught me a lot, I feel I will be getting to where I want to be now – more than just pretty/beautiful, I want to tell a story. … Your emotions, the way you pull from someone and their story was remarkable. We all in that room benefited from your teachings! Never ever doubt that Boon. ” – Shannon.
This message means the world to me!
The Calm & The Chaos workshop has been a true learning for myself and to everyone. It’s the self love, being true to who we are and the honesty that helps cultivate the connection during the process. I am forever grateful to all the precious and valuable connections, support and friendship that we all have developed. Thank you everyone who have taken the time and joined me and Teri in the workshop!
There are a few more seats available in the Artist Vision, Creative Nude class at the Camp Do More on June 12 and June 13 over at Haliburton, Ontario, Canada. If you are interested to see how I work and pick my brain, come join me in the class. I would love to see you there.
